Patent: Dual Mode Free-Drive of Robot Arm

Inventors: Oluf Skov Rosenlund, Andreas Rune Fugl, Anders Skovgaard Knudsen

Company: Universal Robots

About
This patent relates to an improved free drive mode of operation introduced with the UR e-series in 2018. The improved free drive mode of operation makes it possible for the user to move the robotic arm by grabbing the tool flange and push/pull the tool flange in the desired direction, whereby the robot controller assists the user moving the robotic arm based on the force/torque provide by the user to the tool flange. Further, the improved free drive mode of operation also allows the user to grasp any other part of the robotic arm (with no force/torque sensor) to change the posture of the robotic arm.

Business Impact
The technology was first implemented in the control systems of the UR e-series robots in 2018.
